Anticipation is building in Moberly as the community prepares for an unforgettable Emancipation celebration dance at the Municipal Auditorium next Monday night at 9 o’clock. The event will feature the renowned International Sweethearts of Rhythm, an all-girl orchestra making their third appearance in Moberly.
The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, celebrated for their electrifying performances, have recently signed a special booking contract with the Associated Booking Corporation (ABC). This prestigious contract places them alongside such musical luminaries as Lionel Hampton, Billie Holiday, and Andy Kirk, solidifying their status as a premier band in the entertainment world.
The Sweethearts’ performance in Moberly is part of their ongoing tour, which will culminate in a return to Hollywood. There, they are set to appear in a full-length feature film produced by Alexander Productions, an all-Negro company dedicated to showcasing African American talent. This tour and upcoming film highlight the Sweethearts’ significant contributions to music and culture.
The 18-piece orchestra is directed by the talented Anna Mae Winburn and features standout musicians such as drummer Pauline Braddy and trombone stylist Helen Jones. Their performances are known for their dynamic energy and musical excellence, promising an evening of unforgettable entertainment.
As the clock ticks down to Monday night, the community buzzes with excitement. The Municipal Auditorium is expected to be filled with residents eager to dance and celebrate Emancipation Day to the vibrant sounds of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm.
