In a thrilling game at Lockwood Park yesterday, the Moberly Gatewood-Browns secured a decisive victory over the St. Louis All-Stars, winning 12 to 6 before a crowd of 350 spectators. The local Negro nine surged to an early 11-0 lead, showcasing their dominance until the visitors mounted a five-run attack in the seventh inning.
Originally billed as the St. Louis “Metropolitan Stars,” the visiting team fielded a different lineup than previously announced, prompting the local team’s manager to clarify that the players were members of the St. Louis All-Stars, a team familiar to local fans from their games last summer.
Jewell, pitching for the Gatewood-Browns, delivered an impressive performance, allowing only five hits. The visiting team cycled through three pitchers: Whitney, who hurled the first five innings, and Johnson and Hart, who each pitched two innings. Together, they allowed twelve hits from the local team.
Leading the offensive charge for the Browns was Bagby, their first baseman, who achieved four hits in five at-bats, including a home run over the right field fence in the seventh inning.
Looking ahead, the Gatewood-Browns are set to face the Unionville, Mo. Merchants, a white team, next Sunday at Lockwood Park, promising another exciting matchup for local baseball enthusiasts.
