For several years, property values and desirability on Elizabeth Street have been adversely affected by the intended construction of a church by the colored Baptist congregation. The congregation had ambitiously laid the foundation for a substantial white sandstone structure, designed to support a heavy brick superstructure. However, financial constraints halted progress after the foundation was completed, leading to a two-year standstill.
The street’s recent paving added an additional $100 debt to the lot, exacerbating the congregation’s financial woes. Unable to proceed further, the new pastor assessed the situation and concluded that the church’s presence in a neighborhood where it breeds resentment rather than camaraderie was unwise. He advised the congregation to sell the property, a recommendation they accepted.
This decision presents an opportunity for Elizabeth Street property owners to remove what has been seen as an impediment and makes available several highly desirable lots for modern improvements.
