Friday night saw unexpected drama unfold in the neighborhood of the Colored Baptist Church. Though the exact cause of the conflict remains unclear, a dispute erupted among the deacons and prominent members of the congregation, involving both men and women. The scene soon resembled a Russian battlefield, with everyone participating in a heated exchange of words and physical altercations.
The melee was intense, with Parson Grimes reporting he was kicked seven times. Despite the widespread commotion, only one arrest was made. Nelse Thompson was apprehended on a warrant sworn out by the church pastor, Rev. Frank Bates, for disturbing the peace. Thompson pled guilty before Judge Evans the following day and was fined $1 and costs.
It is hoped that this turbulent episode marks the end of strife among the congregation’s members, bringing a semblance of peace back to the church community.
