During the holiday weekend, the Gatewood Browns, Moberly’s fast-stepping Negro team, are set to face two formidable adversaries. Tomorrow, the Browns will take on the Kansas City, Kansas Colts in an away game, followed by a home contest against the local Twilight League All-Stars on Labor Day at Lockwood Park.
The Browns will embark on their journey to Kansas City, Kansas early tomorrow morning, traveling by bus. According to Manager Gatewood, the team is in excellent shape for their back-to-back games. Rodgers is expected to pitch against the Colts, promising a strong performance.
Local anticipation is high for the Labor Day showdown at Lockwood Park, with the game set to begin at 3:00 PM. Both teams boast impressive records, with the Twilight All-Stars never having been scored upon and the Browns enjoying a string of summer victories. The pitcher for the Browns in Monday’s game has yet to be announced. The All-Stars will feature a mysterious “dark horse” pitcher, an out-of-town “whiz” whose identity will be revealed only at game time.
Adding to the excitement, Browns players received uplifting news about their former teammates, LeRoy Matlock and James Crutchfield. Both Matlock and Crutchfield have been playing with the Pittsburgh Crawfords this season. Instead of joining the Crawfords’ winter barnstorming tour, they plan to return home in late September to rejoin the Browns for several end-of-season games.
