On August 4th, Moberly welcomed around 1,600 colored people from other cities and an additional thousand from nearby towns for the Emancipation Day celebration. Excursions were organized from various locations, with the largest group of 650 people arriving from Des Moines. Around 200 participants came from Centralia and Columbia.
Trains brought in extra coaches, all filled to capacity with excited visitors. Special trains will depart at 11 o’clock tonight to return the excursionists to Des Moines and Kansas City.
