Old Negro Church to Be Torn Down, Moberly · Saturday, September 28, 1929

Article Summary: Old Negro Church to Be Torn Down

One of Moberly’s oldest landmarks is facing its final days. The old negro church, situated across the street from the Weber Ice Cream Co., is currently being razed. The Missouri Hay Press Co., which has owned the building for several years, deemed it an eyesore and unsuitable for use, prompting the decision to clear the lot.

In recent years, the old church had been repurposed as a storage room for the Hay Press Company. However, its history runs much deeper. The roof, where countless spiritual revivals once resonated, has been removed. The rafters, once observed by devout worshippers looking heavenward, have been hauled away.

Although a few bricks at the peak of the roof have been torn out, the majority of the building still stands, bravely attempting to withstand the blows of the wreckers. This old church, a silent witness to many heartfelt gatherings and spiritual awakenings, is slowly giving way to the inevitable march of time and progress.
