In a thrilling match at Lockwood Park yesterday afternoon, the Gatewood-Browns, a talented Negro team, secured a 3 to 1 victory against the Jefferson City Mohawks. The standout performance came from their new hurler, Vivian, who dazzled with his three-hit pitching. Vivian, formerly of the Kansas City, Kansas Colts, demonstrated remarkable control and was well-supported by the team’s solid defensive plays.
The Mohawks struggled to make headway, with no player reaching third base until the ninth inning. Their lone run came when Logan beat out an infield hit, advanced to second on a sacrifice by P. Kirkpatrick, and scored on N. Kirkpatrick’s single.
The Gatewood-Browns set the tone early, scoring in the first inning. Jaco walked and then dashed home on Fowler’s impressive triple. Fowler, showcasing his speed and cunning, stole home for the team’s second run. The fifth inning saw Bagby walk, steal second, and score on Vivian’s single, cementing the Browns’ lead.
One of the game’s most memorable moments was Holmes’ spectacular catch of Bagby’s long drive to center field, a defensive highlight that thrilled the crowd.
Looking ahead, the Gatewood-Browns’ manager has announced an exciting lineup of upcoming games. This Sunday, the team will face off against the St. Louis Metropolitan Stars at Lockwood Park. The following Sunday, they will take on the Unionville Merchants, promising more thrilling baseball action.
