In a remarkable turn of events, the National Stars, a renowned group of negro spiritual singers, will perform tonight at the Fourth Street Methodist Episcopal Church, South—a white congregation. Initially scheduled to sing at the Grant Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, the group faced an unexpected challenge when their performance was canceled due to concerns over racial discrimination.
The controversy began when Dr. J. A. Tyler, the manager of the National Stars, announced that half of the seating at Grant Chapel would be reserved for white attendees. This decision led Pastor Browning C. Allen of Grant Chapel to cancel the concert, stating that neither he nor his congregation would support any form of discrimination or segregation.
Despite this setback, the National Stars remained undeterred. An additional complication arose when an automobile accident near Sedalia delayed some members of the group, causing them to miss two scheduled performances. Fortunately, no one was injured, and those who arrived in Moberly performed at Central Christian Church at 7:30 PM and at Fourth Street Church at 9:00 PM, receiving enthusiastic applause at both venues.
The warm reception from the audiences has generated high expectations for tonight’s concert, which is set to begin at 7:30 PM. All twelve members of the National Stars, including the acclaimed soloist Mrs. L. Henton, will be present. Unlike their usual performances, which typically charge between $1 and $2 per seat, tonight’s concert will be free of charge. Instead, a silver offering will be collected to support the sanitarium for tubercular negro patients near San Antonio, Texas.
Join us for an evening of powerful music and unity, as the National Stars light up the stage and demonstrate the spirit of resilience and community.
